Betty Sue Palmer was the mother of actor Johnny Depp. 

She was born on January 1, 1935, in Floyd County, Kentucky to late Walter Everett and Bessie Whitaker Wells. 

Betty Sue, fornmer waitress married John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer. 



They were residing in Owensboro, Kentucky when Johnny was born, but the family moved around a lot during Johnny’s childhood, as he disclosed in a 2002 interview on Inside the Actor’s Studio. 

Betty Sue and John Depp separated in 1978 when Johnny was 15 years old. 

Betty later remarried a man named Robert Palmer, who spent much time in prison. 

Johnny Depp’s mother, Betty Sue Palmer passed away in Los Angeles on Friday, May 20, 2016, following a long illness. She was 81. 



Palmer was reportedly admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s ICU in Los Angeles in 2012. 

Betty is survived by her children from her first marriage: Daniel P. “Danny” Depp, of California, and Deborah Johniene “Debbie” Depp, of Kentucky. 

Betty is also survived by her two children from her second marriage: Elisa Christie Depp-Dembrowski, and John Christopher “Johnny” Depp II of California. 

Eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one brother (Rayburn), and one sister (Peggy Jean).
